  12. Welcome to the PsL August 1994 CD. This month's CD contains over 1200
  13. programs received by PsL in the last 30 days. In addition, this month
  14. includes all the programs from our Windows and DOS sections related to
  15. Business, including Accounting, Scheduling, Vertical Apps, Communications,
  16. Database, Mail List Management, Spreadsheet, Engineering, Math & Statistics,
  17. and Religion.

  21. 1. License & Warranty:

  23. Run PSL_SHRD to read the CD-ROM usage license and warranty.

  26. 2. File Format:
  27.  
  28. All programs are in ZIP format. Some very large programs may have also been
  29. installed on the CD so that individual users of the CD (as opposed to BBS
  30. users) can more easily try them out without having to go through a long,
  31. disk-space eating installation. For the benefit of BBSs, these programs
  32. are also included in ZIP format for easier downloading.

  34. The "preinstalled files" directories do not have FILES.BBS files, as they are
  35. not intended for downloading (because the same files are in ZIP format in
  36. other directories).

  38. All of the new ZIPs have FILE_ID.DIZ files for easier BBS use; however,
  39. due to time constraints in trying to move large sections of PsL's disk-based
  40. library from floppies to the CD on a monthly basis, some of those programs are
  41. in self-extracting archive format rather than in ZIP format and many ZIPs do
  42. not have FILE_ID.DIZ files. There are FILES.BBS files in each directory.

  82. 4. FILES.BBS files:
  83.  
  84. For BBS use, we have added FILES.BBS files listing the contents of each ZIP
  85. file directory. We have been told a dozen different formats to use, but the
  86. format we used was the one most common to the various formats mentioned:

  92. The FILES.BBS files are in the directory FILESBBS.
  93. You can generate custom FILES.BBS files by running PSL_SHRW (in the PSL_NEWS
  94. directory) and looking in the Files menu. (Requires Windows.)

  97. 5. The \SCREENS Directory
  98.  
  99. The Screens directory contains screen shots of some programs on this CD.
  100. For information about how to see the screen shots while reading PSL_NEWS,
  101. see TOGETHER.DOC in the SCREENS directory. (TOGETHER is not required for
  102. viewing screens with PSL_SHRW.)

  105. 6. RUNTIMES
  106.  
  107. The RUNTIMES directory contains run-time files required by some other
  108. programs.
  109.

  111. 7. Problems
  112.  
  113. All the programs on this CD have been tested and should run. If you have
  114. difficulties, write or call PsL's Tech Support department. Most difficulties
  115. can be cleared up over the phone in a couple of minutes. There is normally no
  116. waiting to talk to a technician.
  117.  
  118. (1.) "My machine locks up or reboots when I try to install a program
  119.       using the PSL_NEWS program."
  120.  
  121. You have one of the small percentage of systems with a CD-ROM driver that is
  122. incompatible with PKUNZIP. To get around that problem, we have placed a public
  123. domain unzip program on the CD. To invoke it, you must use the DOS-based
  124. program and run it using the syntax: "PSL_NEWS /U" (without the quotes).
  125.  
  126. The only drawback is that some programs have subdirectory structures stored
  127. in the ZIP files and UNZIP will not recreate the directory structure the way
  128. PKZUNZIP will. To get around that problem, copy BOTH the program ZIP file and
  129. PKUNZIP.EXE from the CD onto your hard disk and then use "PKUNZIP -D [pgm]"
  130. (substitute the program zip file name for "[zip]") to unzip it.
  131.  
  132. (2.) "PKUNZIP tells me to insert another disk when I try to unzip the
  133.       file from the CD."
  134.  
  135. The programmer used a PKZIP flag that he shouldn't have when zipping
  136. the program. To get around this, copy the ZIP file from the CD to your
  137. hard disk and use PKUNZIP to unzip it to the same directory on your
  138. hard disk as the ZIP file.
  139.  
  140. (3.) "I can't view the PCX files shown in the program reviews."
  141.  
  142. To view the PCX files in the DOS-based access program, PSL_NEWS.EXE,
  143. you must set up and run the program TOGETHER which is in \SCREENS
  144. directory. See the file TOGETHER.DOC for instructions. You do NOT need
  145. to use the TOGETHER program if you are using PSL_WIN.EXE to access the
  146. CD-ROM.
  147.  
  148. (4.) "There are no files on the CD."
  149.      "There are no files in one of the directories."
  150.      "I get an error trying to copy a file from the CD."
  151.  
  152. We have only had a few such complaints, but in all cases, there was nothing
  153. wrong with the CD. Some of the users who made the complaints were able to
  154. read the CDs without error on other machines or even when trying later on
  155. the same machine.
  156.  
  157. We suspect that the problem is with dust or dirt in the drive or, more
  158. specifically, on the laser lens, or on the CD-ROM disc itself. If you do not
  159. have a CD lens cleaner, get one from your dealer. Also inspect the non-printed
  160. side of the CD for dust or debris.
  161.  
  162. One caller took the CD out, wiped it off, put it back in, and it worked.
  163. Maybe it was dirty or maybe just re-seating it helped.

  166. 8. Frequently Asked Questions:
  167.  
  168. (1.) "Why don't you install the programs on the CD ready to run instead of in
  169.       ZIP format?"
  170.  
  171. There are many reasons:
  172.  - Many programs try to write back to the directory that they
  173.    are installed in, which cannot be done on a CD.
  174.  
  175.  - Many programmers require that their programs be distributed
  176.    in archived format.
  177.  
  178.  - Some installation programs configure the software to the system they
  179.    are installed on, so that a program installed on our system may not
  180.    work on yours.
  181.  
  182.  - Because we add a section of PsL's disk-based library to the CD each
  183.    month, there is not room to have all the programs dearchived.
  184.  
  185.  - For use of the CDs on BBSs, files must be in archive format.
  186.  
  187. Distributing the programs in archive format makes for a much neater
  188. package, making programs easier to find. Dearchiving a program to
  189. hard disk only takes a few seconds and by using a temporary directory,
  190. you can easily delete the files when done.
  191.  
  192. (2.) "Are the same programs repeated on each month's CD?"
  193.  
  194. No. The \DOS and \WIN directories contain only the new programs received
  195. by PsL during the last 30 days. In addition, we put a different section
  196. of our disk-based library on each month's CD. These sections do repeat
  197. every six months, but they are updated for the thousands of new files
  198. received during the previous six months.
